    Bird found

Post by Bob on Tue Feb 09, 2010 11:39 pm

Had a late bred reported last week. I lost itsome time back while training.
It was in a wildlife rescue center 150 miles away. I got it pickedup and delivered
the poor thing was just a bag of bones. Did not even have the strength
to fly to a perch. The bird is slowly getting better and putting weight back on but
still not flying to a perch. I put the bird on a perch and the bird flys to the floor for food
and the flight is controled ok. Do you think this bird will ever be able to race after being
    so close to deaths door.

Hi Bob i would give the lucky little fellow a chance. Is it ment to be a sprinter or distance pigeon? At what distance did he dissapear? Have you checked to see if there is an old injury site to help explain why he did'nt come home ?
i would feed him up slowly and then some short training tosses when ready, see how he comes, hope he gets better Bob. To live in the wild for several months is a achevement.

The bird is now flying about the loft ok and always first to the floor at food times. She has become very friendly and will fly onto me pecking my ear until I give her a little corn or a few peanuts.
She was quite young and did about 5 X 5mile training tosses. 3 X 10 miles tosses 3 X 20 mile tosses. Then I went to 50 mile weather was over cast with a slight hint of rain but I tossed 16 birds. I got about 10-15miles from home I hit fog/mist and it stayed misty all the way home. Only 6 birds came home through the mist. Next day another 5 came home and 1 came home on the 3rd day. So I lost 4 birds. Just this bird ended up flying in the opposite direction.

Well im glad she's back and getting friendly. If she's no good as a racer use her to race cocks back to or as a dropper.
I think we have all had a training toss where the weather has changed quickly.
