The fancier can recognise a race team that is in a negative energy balance by the following signs:

no wing flapping in the early morning or after feeding.

Disinterest in leaving loft or toss basket, lower lid laziness etc.

The race team in negative energy balance (inadequate energy intake relative to the workload) is susceptible to illness, especially "respiratory" diseases.

In every instance these notes are a general guide only, if you are unsure of the illness, please seek the advice of a Vet.

Mycoplasmosis Catarrh

The chronical form of catarrh in pigeons often is called “Mycoplasmosis”. It is caused by a multiple infection with pathogens: bacteria (e.g. Cocci), viruses (e.g. Herpes) and pathogens which belong to the group of micoplasma organisms. It is assumed that mycoplasma causes severe conditions only in the presence of other infections.

For some reason not fully explained pigeons develop lumps om their bodies, it is an individual problem and is connected with the glands and the pigeons inability to cope with proteins, just like fatty lumps

They can be removed by tying a piece of thread round the base or left alone and they will fall off, pigeons seem to fully recover

This is blown crop and can be treated by releasing the air by using a hypodermic needle the kind that fit on the end of syringes, clean the needle with surgical spirits

Peirce the skin and gently let the air out gently, birds can take weeks to recover from the rupture that caused it, keep the bird as calm as you can, best to isolate it in a darkened area

Cause and Symptoms - Because of the way this disease damages the immune system and seems to invite secondary infection, Circo Virus is sometimes called pigeon AIDS. Circo Virus damages the lymphocytes in the blood, which are closely associated with the immune system. With damaged lymphocytes, the pigeons become susceptible to secondary infections with other viruses, parasites and bacteria. Pigeons infected with Circo Virus can also have continuing problems with diseases like respiratory infections, ...

Paratyphus is caused by a bacteria called Salmonella Typhimurium var. Copenhaeghen.

Paratyphus is a very difficult disease because in most of the times it is a subclinical disease, this means that you don’t see anything at a pigeon, that can be infected with the bacteria!! The bacteria can be present for a long time, before you ever saw any problem.

Way of infection

Most of the time the pigeons will be infected orally, the bacteria goes into the intestines and further on it will ...

Health or its absence is the key to all results, good or bad! Regardless of the quality of your pigeons, if you are unable to keep them healthy they are doomed to perennially poor results. I believe it is safe to say that the person who has pigeons of lesser quality but has learned to keep them close to the top of their health cycle will outperform a group of superior pigeons whose critical health is little understood and has, unfortunately, been ...

PIGEONS SHOULD BE BATHED AT LEAST ONCE PER WEEK IN ORDER SO THEY CAN REMAIN IN TOP CONDITION, BUT THERES ONLY A FEW THAT KNOW HOW TO USE THE BATHING OF PIGEONS TO INCREASE FITNESS.

BATHING HAS AN EFFECT ON THE FEATHERING; IT BREAKS UP THE OLD OIL THAT PROTECTS THE BIRDS FROM THE WEATHER. THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT THIS COMES ABOUT BY CHANGING SKIN TEMPRETURE, WHICH SEEMS TO CAUSE A HUMIDIFIEING EFFECT BETWEEN THE FEATHERS.
